Overview

Statistics show that more than 200,000 Americans die of sudden cardiac arrest every year. Up to 50,000 of these deaths could have been prevented if someone had initiated the Cardiac Chain of Survival, and an automated external defibrillator (AED) had been available for immediate use at the time of the emergency.

The American Red Cross has a vision of one person in every household being trained in CPR lifesaving skills, all Americans being within four minutes of an AED and someone trained to use that AED in the event of sudden cardiac arrest.

Chain of Survival

How defibrillators work

Manual defibrillators work by giving the heart a controlled electric shock, forcing all the heart muscles to contract at once, and, hopefully jolting it back into a regular rhythm.

Historically, only trained medical professionals were able to interpret the heart rhythms on manual defibrillator devices. However, today’s new automated external defibrillators (AEDs) use embedded computer chips to analyze the rhythms instantly and accurately, making it possible for non-medical professionals to administer the same vital service without risking an accidental shock.

Who has AEDs and Why do They Need Them?

Who has an AED?
Why have an AED here?
Industrial and Retail Companies Every day, thousands of people frequent offices, business parks, industrial plants and retail sites. Research shows shopping malls are one of the most likely spots for cardiac arrest to occur.
Residential and Resort Industries Apartment complexes, hotels, resorts and casinos have found that having an AED program enhances the value of the property and strengthens guest and resident safety.
Fitness and Recreational Facilities Sport lovers-participants and fans-are vulnerable to cardiac arrest. Golf courses and sports stadiums are in the top five most likely places for cardiac arrest to occur. Pro-active facilities have AEDs on site.
Schools and Municipal Sites Public health advocates are now recommending defibrillators be on hand wherever crowds of people congregate making schools, campuses and municipalities appropriate places for AEDs.
Law Enforcement Police are often the first on the scene of sudden cardiac arrests. A study in the Annals of Emergency Medicine shows when police do arrive before paramedics, victims of SCA are ten times more likely to survive if the police defibrillate when necessary.
Churches and Non-profits Places where many different people congregate and hold services frequently are likely to have someone in a crowd who may experience cardiac arrest and could be saved if an AED program was in place.
