Monroe County Chapter Helps Homeless Veterans with "Welcome Home Kits"
05/14/2010

Grant helps veterans program

Thirty-five local veterans will receive “Welcome Home” kits — including kitchen items, toiletries, a weather radio, first aid kit, and cleaning supplies — to herald their transition into homes. This help is thanks to a partnership between the Monroe County Chapter of the American Red Cross and Housing and Urban Development/Veteran Affairs Supportive Housing.

These “Welcome Home” kits were made possible by a Service to the Armed Forces (SAF) grant from American Red Cross National Headquarters. Also assisting were Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Association at IU. Sororities and fraternities gathered supplies and brought them to the Red Cross before leaving town at the end of spring semester.

The SAF program has enabled the Monroe County chapter to support new services like the “Welcome Home” kits for the HUD-VASH program, which provides permanent housing to homeless veterans through a partnership with the local Housing Authority. Other new programs begun with the help of the SAF grant are the Monroe Owen Military Support Network, a group that meets monthly to raise awareness and share information about local resources for military members and veterans, and service to VA medical center, which provides ongoing comfort supplies for veterans and their families.
