Donate Blood During Diversity Awareness Month
American Red Cross needs more donors to ensure diverse blood supply
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (Oct. 14, 2009) – October is Diversity Awareness Month. Help the American Red Cross ensure a stable and diverse blood supply by making an appointment to donate blood or encouraging others to become blood donors.
“It is important for our blood supply to reflect the diversity of the American public,” said Linda Voss, CEO of the River Valley Blood Services Region. “Patients who receive transfusions tend to do better with blood that is closely matched to their own. In special cases, this comes from donors from the same ethnic background.”
Rare blood types are found in all communities, regardless of ethnicity. This month, make celebrating diversity a priority in your life by donating blood. You could change a life, starting with your own.
Upcoming Blood Donation Opportunities:
- Friday, Oct. 16, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., City of Bloomington, 401 N. Morton, Suite 210, Bloomington, Ind.
- Monday, Oct. 19, 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., Wright Residence Center, 501 N. Jordan Ave., Bloomington, Ind.

About the American Red Cross
Governed by volunteers and supported by giving individuals and communities, the American Red Cross is the single largest supplier of blood products to hospitals throughout the United States. While local hospital needs are always met first, the Red Cross also helps ensure no patient goes without blood no matter where or when they need it. In addition to providing nearly half of the nation’s blood supply, the Red Cross provides relief to victims of disaster, trains millions in lifesaving skills, serves as a communication link between U.S. military members and their families, and assists victims of international disasters or conflicts.
